Instrument Rating (IR)

An instrument rating is required to fly through clouds or fog. Special Air Academy offers the following instrument ratings:

  • Basic Instrument Rating (BIR)
  • Compentency Based Instrument rating (CB-IR)
  • Instrument Rating (Aeroplane) (IR(A))

Hour requirements

For an Instrument Rating certificate, the student pilot must have flown at least 50 training hours with and under the supervision of an instructor. These 50 flight hours consist of:

  • minimum 10 hours of basic instrument flying
  • at least 40 hours of instrument procedure flying

Before you can start the training you must first:

  • have at least a PPL(A).
  • Have flown cross country (overland) for 50 hours as a captain

The theory

 The IR(A) or ATPL(A) theory training is given by< wpml_nbsp >Orbit-Groundschool.

All theory subjects must be passed within 18 months. After the theory exam IR(A) has been passed, you can take the practical exam. The practical exam must be passed within 24 months after the theory exam.

 

Before one can fly IFR independently, one must undergo a medical examination including an audiogram.
