Basic Instrument Rating (BIR)

To fly through clouds or fog, an instrument rating is required; the Basic Instrument Rating is a lighter version of the full Instrument Rating. The theory requirements are the same as those of the CB-IR and the practice is fully competency based. This means that there is no minimum number of hours, as soon as you have reached the required level you can take the exam.

Practice building

The practical training consists of three or four modules:

  • Module 1 – Pre-flight operations and general handling
  • Module 2 – Departure and arrivals, 3D approaches and 2D approaches
  • Module 3 – En-route IFR procedures
  • Module 4 – Flight with one engine inoperative (multi-engine aircraft only)

Before you can start the training you must first:

  • have at least a PPL(A).

Holders of an EIR(A) can be exempted from module 1 after an assessment during the first lesson.

The theory

The BIR(A) theory training is given by Orbit-Groundschool.

All theory subjects must be passed within 18 months. After passing the BIR(A) theory exam, you can take the practical exam. The practical exam must be passed within 24 months after the theory exam.

Before one can fly IFR independently, one must undergo a medical examination including an audiogram. Contact the head of the flight school first for some good tips!
